- Type of traineeship: Data Analysis and AI Research Trainees
- Location: Brussels
- The selected candidate must reside either at this location or within a reasonable proximity that allows for the satisfactory execution of their duties - Information about living in Brussels
- Directorate/Service: NMD/INF/CNS - Integrated CNS Unit
- Start: Spring 2024
- Duration: from 4 to 8 months
- Publication date: 01/02/2024
- Closing date: 29/02/2024
Your team
Within the Network Management Directorate, the Communication, Navigation and Surveillance Unit, amongst other activities, collects and processes very large volume of technical data (Big Data) to estimate performance metrics and deliver the CNS Monitoring services.
The CNS innovation team develops artificial-intelligence based prototypes aiming at:
- processing large amount of data in an efficient way, fitting and creating new data to increase the Monitoring service,
- automating complex analysis and tasks to reduce the required manual effort from experts,
- mining large amount of data to detect deviation from expected behaviour, automatically preparing the data for investigations and prioritising possible anomalies that have the most impact on the network, and supporting the resolution of these anomalies.
We offer two specialised traineeships in aeronautical surveillance. The first focuses on developing an AI model using Markov methods for outlier detection in data from 60 European receivers. The second explores using Large Language Models to mine and interpret this surveillance data. Each traineeship provides a unique opportunity to innovate in aviation data processing.
Your role
PURPOSE OF THE TRAINEESHIP
We believe in giving opportunities to young people who are seeking an on-the-job training experience that will enable them to acquire real-life work experience where they can apply and increase the knowledge acquired in the course of your studies.
What you can expect:
- Real-life tasks and responsibilities
- Perfect chance to apply and improve your knowledge and skills with regular feedback.
- Opportunity to expand your professional network.
An international environment where everybody is different and valued.
MAIN LEARNING OBJECTIVES & TASKS
We are offering two distinct traineeships, each with a specific focus in the field of aeronautical surveillance. Concretely, this is what you will be doing:
AI-Based Model (Markov) for Outlier Detection:
- Prepare data by downloading sample datasets and preprocessing them using existing tools for modelling.
- Set up a Markov Model, identify and define various states and transitions for the model.
- Create a prototype system to process the surveillance data.
- Analyse and benchmark different approaches to clustering the detected outliers.
- Actively participate in CNS meetings and coordination activities, communicate project developments, and prepare presentations and technical reports as required.
Large Language Model (LLM) for Data Mining
- Assess and document the features of various Large Language Models, including their availability, whether they are open-source or require licensing, and their reported effectiveness in data mining.
- Create and organise datasets for training, validation, and testing purposes.
- Compare the effectiveness of different Large Language Models in mining surveillance data.
- Actively participate in CNS meetings and coordination activities, communicate project developments, and prepare presentations and technical reports as required.
All these tasks will be undertaken under the guidance and mentorship of more experienced team members, ensuring a supportive and collaborative learning environment.
DESIRED DURATION
From 4 to 8 months.
Start date: Spring 2024
Your profile
- Completed university studies of 3 years in a relevant domain (Electrical engineering, Computer science, Data science, Artificial Intelligence, Aeronautical Engineering, or equivalent);
- Basic knowledge of aeronautical surveillance infrastructure (primary, secondary radar, ADS-B) would be an advantage;
- Interest in Data science, AI/Machine learning and Big Data processing;
- Ability to work in a multinational and multicultural environment;
- Professional conduct in line with the corporate behaviours of the Agency, i.e. result-driven, readiness to change, customer focus, integrity and team-player approach;
